About me

I’m an experienced commercial barrister and advocacy teacher

My career

I’ve had an unconventional career. I studied law in Scotland and the US, but became an English barrister. I practised at the independent Bar in London, but also as an employed barrister in the pioneering advocacy group of a global law firm. I specialised in banking litigation, but also represented a diverse range of commercial clients from Big Four accounting firms to a Premier League footballer’s agent.

For over a decade, I have taught the theory and practice of advocacy to graduate law students, first at University College London and then at the Centre of Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary, University of London.

As it turned out, my unconventional career was the perfect foundation for teaching advocacy skills. I’ve written thousands of documents for court and arbitral proceedings, and appeared as advocate at hundreds of hearings. I therefore know what effective advocacy looks like. I’ve also taught hundreds of law students from all over the world. I therefore have a good idea of what engages audiences (and what does not).
